CARBON REDUCTION PLAN

3th January 2026
--------------------------------------------------
1. Commitment to Carbon Reduction
--------------------------------------------------
Station Yard Dental Practice is committed to reducing its environmental impact and supporting the UK’s transition to a low-carbon economy. While the practice is not legally required to produce a Carbon Reduction Plan, this document demonstrates our voluntary commitment to sustainability and responsible environmental management, in line with NHS and public sector expectations.
--------------------------------------------------
2. Scope of the Carbon Reduction Plan
--------------------------------------------------
This plan covers emissions arising from:
- Clinical activities
- Use of digital and cloud-based technologies
- Staff travel to and from work
- Waste reduction and resource efficiency
As a small dental practice, our emissions are limited in scale; however, we aim to reduce them wherever reasonably practicable.
--------------------------------------------------
3. Baseline Emissions
--------------------------------------------------
Due to the size of the practice and absence of mandatory reporting requirements, a formal carbon footprint calculation has not been undertaken. This plan therefore focuses on practical, proportionate actions that demonstrably reduce emissions compared to traditional dental practice methods.
--------------------------------------------------
4. Current Carbon Reduction Measures
--------------------------------------------------
The practice has implemented the following measures:
Digital Dentistry and IT
- Use of intra-oral scanners (3Shape and iTero), eliminating the need for physical impressions and reducing transport of plaster models to dental laboratories (Adept).
- Use of digital X-ray imaging scanner (Acteon PSPIX 2), removing the need for chemical processing, reducing hazardous waste, and eliminating transport of chemicals and X-ray film.
- Use of cloud-based practice management software (GoSensei, Carestream), reducing reliance on on-site servers, lowering energy consumption, and supporting more efficient data storage and system maintenance.
- Use of an in-house CBCT scanner (Acteon Prime) to reduce the need for patient travel to external imaging centres.
Transport
- Use of electric vehicles (Marina Rossmann) for travel to and from work
- Reduction in courier services through digital transmission of laboratory prescriptions and imaging.
- Optimising procurement and ordering processes to reduce the frequency of deliveries and associated environmental impact.
Clinical and Administrative Practices
- Paper-light workflows and electronic patient records (GoSensei)
- Digital communication with patients, laboratories, and suppliers (Digital consent forms and SMS reminders)
- Secure electronic storage to minimise printing and paper consumption (Carestream).
- Reviewing and selecting energy suppliers and tariffs that offer renewable or low-carbon electricity where practicable.
--------------------------------------------------
5. Planned Carbon Reduction Initiatives
--------------------------------------------------
The practice will continue to:
- Maintain and expand digital-first clinical workflows
- Review energy efficiency when replacing dental, IT, and imaging equipment
- Encouraging car sharing and shared commuting where practicable to reduce transport-related environmental impact.
- Optimise appointment scheduling to reduce unnecessary patient travel
- Consider suppliers’ environmental practices where proportionate and relevant
--------------------------------------------------
6. Carbon Reduction Targets
--------------------------------------------------
Given the size of the practice, formal numeric carbon targets are not set. The practice instead commits to:
- Avoiding re-introduction of carbon-intensive legacy systems
- Favouring digital, low-waste solutions
- Reviewing carbon reduction measures annually as part of governance review
--------------------------------------------------
7. Governance and Responsibility
--------------------------------------------------
Overall responsibility for this Carbon Reduction Plan rests with the Practice Owner Marina Rossmann.
Day-to-day oversight is delegated to the Practice Manager Rebecca Marshall.
This plan will be reviewed annually and updated as appropriate.
--------------------------------------------------
8. Declaration
--------------------------------------------------
Station Yard Dental Practice confirms that the information provided in this Carbon Reduction Plan is accurate and reflects our current and planned approach to reducing carbon emissions.
